PA-1: Sustainability Coordination

The Office of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability (OESS) organizes committees, which are collectively called the Institute for Stewardship of the Natural World (ISNW) Committees. The OESS is advised by an Executive Council, and council members chair some of the the ISNW committees. Faculty, staff, students and local government staff representatives may serve on the committees. The committees make policy and practice recommendations, conduct projects related to their expertise, and educate/model actions for other employees and students. One of the functions of the ISNW committee members is to be ambassadors of campus sustainability initiatives and promote the initiatives to their peers. The committees' approach to environmental stewardship is inclusive of the three dimensions of sustainability. The Education and Scholarship Committee promotes and measures learning, engagement, and cultural change for environmental stewardship, as well as promotes scholarly and creative activities that advance environmental sustainability. The East Campus Hillside Advisory Committee provides recommendations, conducts scholarly studies, and conducts outreach about the naturalized area. *The ISNW Conservation Committee is counted under EN-7 Employee Educators Program. The Committee engages other employees in environmental stewardship to help preserve natural resources and achieve sustainable outcomes. The committee focuses on individual actions specified in university policies and the power of individual actions to collectively make a difference. *The ISNW Awareness Committee is also counted under EN-7 Employee Educators Program. The ISNW Awareness Committee was formerly the Awareness and Programming Committee; it's name and focus have changed with changing campus needs. The ISNW Awareness Committee promotes an environmentally literate community whose members think critically and act, individually and collectively, as model stewards of the natural world. The committee raises stakeholders’ awareness of their environmental impacts and enables others to make informed choices about becoming more effective environmental stewards.

The Office of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability (OESS) is a department in the Division of Access and Enrollment Management at James Madison University. The OESS coordinates the collaborative efforts of the university to promote cultural change for environmental sustainability and stewardship and a broader sense of citizenship. The mission of the OESS is to facilitate sustainability by advocating for environmental stewardship priorities, coordinating reporting and recognition of the sustainability-related efforts of the JMU community, and encouraging engagement of all members of the JMU community in sustainability education and environmental stewardship. The responsibility for sustainability efforts (including environmental stewardship) is not housed in one university unit, but is shared across all divisions. JMU’s achievements can be attributed to the efforts of staff, faculty, and students in many areas, commonly in collaboration. The OESS is tasked with university-wide coordination. Highlights of JMU's environmental stewardship and sustainability accomplishments can be found at http://www.jmu.edu/stewardship/. As just one example, faculty, and staff collaborated to begin assessing the culture of sustainability.

Summarized highlights of responsibilities include: 1. Coordinate development of plans for campus environmental stewardship and sustainability. 2. Provide administration and coordination for the campus-wide stewardship committees (called the Institute for Stewardship of the Natural World) and office. 3. Coordinate the documentation of campus environmental stewardship and sustainability progress (including gathering, analyzing, and reporting information on institutional progress). 4. Manage and implement institutional special projects. Provide support to university departments, programs, and groups implementing projects related to environmental stewardship and sustainability.
