Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
Community Based Learning took place in 12 courses in Fall 2018 (engaging 86 students, though 391 were offered the opportunity to engage) and in 19 courses in Spring 2019 (engaging 205 students though 345 had the opportunity to engage). Service learning was incorporated in 31 non-honors courses and in one honors course over the 2018/2019 academic year.

Thanks to service learning imbedded in courses, JCCC was actively present in supporting 46 community organizations in fall 2018 and 59 community organizations in the spring 2019. Students in these courses contributed 2628.25 hours over the course of fall 2018 and 3001.53 hours over the course of spring 2019. JCCC students engaged in community based learning clearly strengthen the community by responding to its needs.

Service learning is also happening over the summer, a time when JCCC students serve communities beyond the bounds of the county and sometimes beyond the national borders. In summer 2019, eleven students traveled to Las Pintas, Mexico, to install solar panels to help the local community. They contributed a total of 440 hours of service. Seven other students served the local community: contributing a total of 47.5 hours to the JCCC campus farm, the Public Library in Lawrence, JCCC CLEAR Program, KC Pet Project or JCCC Tiny House.

Over the course of the 2018/2019 academic year, JCCC students contributed a total of 6,237.78 hours of service, more of which was integrated in the curriculum (see Community Based Learning Newsletter attached). Service learning is successfully integrated in courses in disciplines such as Sociology, Leadership, Environmental Science, Education, Dental Hygiene, English, Political Science, Economics, Philosophy, Psychology or Religious Studies. It is a definite value added to the JCCC and local community.
