Part 1. Hazardous waste minimization and disposal

A brief description of steps taken to reduce hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
The chemistry department has implement micro-scaling whenever possible. An inventory control/tracking system has been implemented to avoid unnecessary purchase of hazardous, universal, or non-regulated chemicals. A concerted effort is made to encourage the use of alcohol-based thermometers instead of mercury-based ones.
A brief description of how the institution safely disposes of hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
The university has a written hazardous, universal, and non-regulated waste management plan. All such waste is disposed of through a licensed hazardous waste vendor. All manifests are maintained by both the university and the vendor.
A brief description of any significant hazardous material release incidents during the previous three years, including volume, impact and response/remediation:
No significant hazardous material releases have occurred in the last three years.
A brief description of any inventory system employed by the institution to facilitate the reuse or redistribution of laboratory chemicals:
No such program in place.

The Office of Computer and Information Systems processes old CPUs, monitors, etc. to assure that all information is deleted and the components are donated to Urban Renewal Corp. (urbanrenewal.org) for re-use in job-training programs. The Office of Environmental Health and Safety accepts all other electronics waste from the campus community, including students.
Additionally, Kean's vendor, Clean Earth (R2), follows established protocols for any e-waste recycling that cannot be donated.
