Sustainability research focuses on a key principle of environmental, social or economic sustainability such as creation care, social justice or the implications of economic development. Sustainability research may address a sustainability challenge, such as climate change or poverty, or further understanding in the interconnectedness of societal and environmental challenges. Sustainability research leads toward solutions that support economic prosperity, social wellbeing, and ecological health.

A sub-committee of the university's Sustainability Coalition adopted the definition for sustainability research and evaluated scholarship based upon this definition.
The committee consisted of Michael Ferber (Director of Environmental Studies and Assistant Professor of Geography), John Wood (Dean of the Natural Sciences) and Will Van Arragon (Assistant Professor of History).
The subcommittee studies the university's course catalog and questioned many faculty regarding the use of environmental, social or economic sustainability in their courses.
