In the opening to the 2010 Strategic Directions Document of The King's University College it states, "Taken together, these themes express the contours and direction of the unfolding, world changing story of reconciliation and redemption in which The King's University College community is called to play a part. We bear academic witness to the gospel of peace – in Christ God made peace with humanity. Our story speaks of God’s passion for shalom – the restoration and fulfillment of all things – God, humans, and all creation – in justice and delight. We expect and long for the fulfillment of shalom, when all creatures flourish and receive their due in a restored creation (Revelation 21). Until then, guided by God’s Spirit, we join in the mission of God’s people in all walks of life, living toward this vision of God’s reign over all creation." This is realized in the operational priorities in a latter part of the plan: G. Operational Priorities 1. Foster wise and sustainable development of our physical, financial, and technological resources through effective and forward-looking management. The King's University College has been blessed with remarkable resources in terms of facilities, finances, and technology. We wish to use and develop these resources in ways that embody commitment to creation care and enabling members of our community to use their full potential in service of our shared mission. We will: · Incorporate sustainability into campus life by working together as students, staff, and faculty to impact changes in attitudes, policy planning, and course curricula, and to realize savings in fiscal spending and energy use · Provide the technological resources and training faculty, staff, and students need to function effectively in their respective areas of responsibility. · Develop ancillary services to enhance the campus experience for students, faculty, staff, and visitors, and identify potential revenue-generating opportunities where possible · Manage and develop financial resources to support long-term economic sustainability by addressing capital debt reduction and eliminating operating deficits. King’s characteristic features, as identified in the 2010-2015 Strategic Direction Document, emphasize a holistic approach that defies simplistic technical solutions. Characteristic Feature number three states, “King’s is a university with an eye for the big picture. King’s cultivates delight in learning and a broad curricular perspective that reflects “all things” in their diversity and unity. We explore and connect all areas of learning with openness, joy, and discernment because they provide avenues of insight into marvelous dimensions of creation and stir in us a sense of awe for our Creator.” A Characteristic Feature of the university as outlined in the 2010 – 2015 Strategic Directions Document asserts, “that students learn deeply through engaging instruction and co-curricular programs. Additionally, an operational priority of the university is to, “Function as a good neighbour and effective partner in various contexts, including relations with the civic community, other academic institutions, international entities, Aboriginal communities, and the business community.” A strategic priority of the university is to, “Enhance our institutional capacity for research and artistic work, building on areas of institutional strength and cultural significance, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration for service-oriented scholarship.” Other excerpts from the plan state that; "As an academic community committed to creation care, we are concerned about global climate change and its potential for adverse health, social, economic and ecological effects. We recognize our responsibility to advance knowledge for society and our obligation to demonstrate leadership in areas of community, national and global importance. We believe universities can fulfill these expectations by sharing knowledge, research and best practices about climate change with our students and the public. We will pursue responsible solutions to address the climate change challenge, commit to the following actions: • We will exercise leadership in reducing emissions of greenhouse gases in collaboration with our communities. • We will develop measurable targets using research and science. • We will develop achievable and practical plans to achieve reduction targets. • We will put in place rigorous assessment and measurement procedures. • We will fully disclose and be accountable for our actions.
