A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:
Facilities supports and encourages sustainability programs across campus, including programs for students. This includes access to recycling for residence students, recycling and large item donation services when students move out of residence, and encouraging creation care best practices such as turning off lights, reporting leaking taps, using re-usable mugs, and taking transit.
Some specific accomplishments include:
- New LED high-output tubes are being installed for our gymnasium high bay fixture, which equals a 48% reduction in electrical consumption.
- New pendant lights have been installed that rely on 'harvested daylight.' Daylight harvesting systems use natural daylight to offset the amount of electric lighting needed to light a room, which reduces overall energy consumption. This is accomplished using lighting control systems that dim or switch electric lighting in response to the changes in daylight.
- Maintenance staff retrofitted a number of classrooms with 15 watt LED smart tubes, which resulted in a reduction of electrical consumption by 56% in these areas and will reduce King’s carbon footprint by 11.6 metric tons per year.
- Two Black Hawk power conditioners were hooked up to the main power feed of the university to reduce power cost and consumption
- Replaced old inefficient tower residence air conditioning chillers. Three high efficiency units with 6 stages in total comprise the new cooling system and new RW-series units are at least 30% more efficient than the old a/c unit and run very quietly. The new refrigerant it uses is far more environmentally friendly as well.
- Replacement of 17 metal halide 150 watt wall packs with Phillips 36.5 watt LED wall packs located around the perimeter of the North Academic Building.
- Installation of an electric vehicle charging station on The King's University campus
