A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities:
The LMU Sustainability Office decided to merge its Green Office program with The City of Los Angeles Green Business Program. As a result, all certified offices are recognized both by Loyola Marymount University and the City of Los Angeles. The City of Los Angeles Green Business Program (LAGBP) has certified almost 600 businesses since its launch in 2014. This voluntary assistance program aims to increase energy and water efficiency, generate cost-savings, reduce waste, promote environmental awareness, and create a healthier environment for Angelenos. All certified offices receive recognition as an LMU Office Leader as well as a City of Los Angeles Green Business with an official certificate signed by Mayor Garcetti. LMU collaborates with an employee from the city in order to certify offices based on a set of criteria.
Upon visiting with these offices and selecting a rep for each office they are the peer educator for faculty/staff.
as such they
- distribute announcements
- talk about sustainability issues
- serve as liaison with sustainability office
- give sustainability presentations available from sustainability office
- ensure to maintain green office standards
- help bring awareness and presence from their networks on campus to attend sustainability events.
- share info on new sustainability campus programs/ announcements
A brief description of how the employee educators are selected:
A Green Leader from each office is the rep and peer educator as invited to participate in the Green Office Program through an announcement and outreach from the Green LMU office. Outreach is available to all offices and departments thus all employees are served by this program. This point of contact is the peer education rep to spread the word from their training about sustainability and green offices.
A brief description of the formal training that the employee educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:
Green Leaders are required to fill out an online survey about their green office practices in their own office. Then followed up with a visit from Green LMU where work-study students and the Campus Sustainability Manager would evaluate the office and points. The Green Leader will then be trained on what he/she could do to improve the sustainability of the office and educate his/her fellow co-workers. A certification would then be given to the office and the Green Leader would keep in communicate with Green LMU via e-mail and newsletters to attend upcoming workshops. The green leader will be able to give sustainability office presentations, based off their training on what a green office is.
A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or paid faculty/staff coordination):
The sustainability office and city of Los Angeles provide time and certification help. They also provide staff training, presentation material, marketing material, handouts, latest news, and other evolving incentives.
