The purpose of this committee is to build and foster a framework for building a culture of sustainability at the University. The committee makes recommendations related to environmental sustainability to the appropriate offices and governing bodies of the university. The committee may form subcommittees or working groups to plan/study particular projects as needed. The committee helps to set the University’s sustainability goals & evaluate the progress toward these goals. The committee reviews & advises the university on current and proposed projects and policies related to sustainability. The committee determines ways to increase environmental awareness and education by fostering a dialogue between operations, teaching, research, and student engagement around the issue of sustainability & justice. The committee works with Marketing and Communication to ensures that the sustainability efforts of the University are being appropriately publicized.

Loyola's Sustainability Office helps to fulfil the institution’s mission in a way that encompasses human and ecological health, social justice, secure livelihoods, and a better world for all generations. Our work encompasses reducing our impact on the environment, fostering healthy ecosystems on our campus, and investing in resiliency and adaptation efforts. Caring for Our Common Home also extends beyond the environment, also focusing on the social, economic, and spiritual aspects related to sustainability.

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:
Loyola has sustainability working groups to coordinate this work across the entire institution. These five groups (Academics, Operations, Engagement, Planning & Administration, and Laudato Si') organize sustainability efforts on campus and align these efforts with the STARS framework, the Laudato Si’ commitment, other university initiatives, and the strategic planning process. The Sustainability Working Groups meet monthly during the semesters and provide an inclusive and collaborative experience for students, staff, faculty, and community members to contribute to sustainability on campus.
