A brief description of how the physical campus plan or amendment includes sustainability:
The physical campus plan puts an emphasis on balancing aesthetics, Jens Jensen design principles, and ecological sustainability. It calls for utilizing and promoting awareness of native plants and experimenting with no-mow areas in non-central campus lawn areas. It also calls to zone campus with different management prescriptions to reduce high-intensity management in non-critical areas.
The plan also promotes wellness through enhance opportunities for outdoor recreation and physical activity. Included in this is the removal of a road in central campus to make the area more pedestrian and bike friendly while also creating a larger green space. The plan recommends adding more hiking trails and connecting to a city bike trail.
The plan recommends highlighting the connection to the Upper Iowa River and enhancing outdoor opportunities near the river. It also calls to create outdoor gathering spaces and opportunities for educational experiences, including a college garden.
Finally, the plan recommends maintaining and restoring biological diversity on campus lands as a model of responsible land stewardship and conservation practices.
