Marquette’s Office of Residence Life offers two unique Living-Learning Communities. The first is the Inclusive Leadership CommUNITY, and is for first-year students. A description of the program is as follows:
The McCormick Hall Inclusive Leadership CommUNITY is a vibrant residential learning community open to all undergraduate students. It has male and female wings and houses 70 residents. Students from minority and majority cultures have an opportunity to interact with and learn from each other in an environment accepting of all people.
Participation in a two-semester seminar focusing on cultural diversity is required of all members of the CommUNITY. Students enhance their knowledge of cultures through readings and attendance at cultural events on campus and within the city. Students earn 1.5 credit hours after completing each semester.
Students develop and cultivate leadership skills through planning and implementing social and educational programs with cultural themes, including dinners, speakers and retreats.
Valuable resources to aid in the programming process are available through the Office of Residence Life, McCormick Hall staff, Office of Student Development and Marquette University Student Government. Students are encouraged to share their experiences and knowledge through involvement in other student organizations and activities.
The second Living-Learning Community is the Dorothy Day Social Justice Community. This community is for second-year students. A description of the program is as follows:
The Social Justice Living Learning Community is an opportunity for sophomore students to live on two floors in Straz Tower and focus on creating positive social change.
Participants will take one class with fellow community members each semester:
Fall semester: Philosophy 1001, Philosophy of Human Nature
Spring semester: Philosophy 2310, Philosophy of Ethics
The courses include a service-learning component designed to enhance students' academic experience through engagement with Milwaukee. Students can spend their sophomore year living with others who have similar goals: advocating for justice issues, whether poverty or fair trade, the environment or education. As a member of the Social Justice Living Learning Community, students will:
• Take classes focused specifically on social justice with opportunities for service learning
• Live with others who share the same interest in social justice
• Have access to additional development opportunities within the residence hall
• Connect with faculty and staff members who will help you explore your advocacy and service interests
All interested students must meet the following qualifications:
• Sophomore standing (second academic year at Marquette) in Fall 2011
• Plan to take PHIL 1001 and PHIL 2310 sophomore year
• Submit an application to the community
Additional information and applications can be found on the Office of Residence Life’s Living-Learning Communities website.
