A brief description of the institution’s sustainability partnerships with the local community:
Marquette has several community sustainability partnerships. Two examples include the Milwaukee 7 Water Council and the annual Green Energy Summit. Marquette, along with the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, is working with the Milwaukee 7 Water Council to create a water research hub in the Milwaukee area. This effort is meant to catapult Milwaukee into water technology markets and draw companies to the area, as well as provide extensive water research opportunities. The Green Energy Summit is an annual conference held downtown Milwaukee dedicated to the motivation and education of professionals, investors and entrepreneurs for opportunities in clean energy and sustainable practices, as well as for workers-in-transition and students to be important players in the future workforce. Marquette sponsors and helps with planning for this summit. Several colleges within the university also have community partnerships. One example is the School of Dentistry’s Focus on Children Program. Another example is the College of Engineering hosting the Badger State Science and Engineering Fair (BSSEF). The BSSEF is one of Wisconsin’s primary vehicles to motivate students to study science, technology, engineering and math. The Diederich College of Communication has partnered with local organizations such as Slow Food Wisconsin Southeast and Growing Power. Working in teams structured like small agencies, students are using social media and digital storytelling as well as traditional advertising and PR tools to build awareness of the Slow Food movement, promote a campus chapter and raise funds for Growing Power.
