Majors and degree programs

Does the institution offer at least one sustainability-focused major, degree program, or the equivalent for graduate students?:
Yes

Name of the sustainability-focused graduate-level degree program:
Master of Engineering: Sustainability in Engineering and Design (M.Eng., non-thesis, 45 credits)

A brief description of the graduate-level degree program:
Master of Engineering (M.Eng., non-thesis, 45 credits) in Sustainability in Engineering and Design trains engineers, architects, and urban planners to tackle complex sustainability problems in an interdisciplinary environment.

The program's core courses will equip students with the necessary concepts, skills, and tools to perform engineering and design towards more sustainable products, infrastructure, and services. Students will understand multiple sustainability concepts and paradigms, appreciate the complexity of sustainability problems, analyze complex problems using systems-based frameworks, evaluate sustainability metrics, and understand professional and leadership roles in addressing sustainability challenges.

Upon completion of the program, students will be equipped to devise solutions using holistic strategies, apply sustainability and systems-thinking, and assess proposed solutions against quantitative sustainability metrics.

The program has a core of eight required sustainability courses (27 credits) that provide a solid foundation in sustainability issues, systems thinking and important analytical skills. This foundation is reinforced through six complementary courses (minimum 18 credits) centered around four specific sustainability domains, or streams:

- Renewable energy and energy efficiency;
- Sustainable industrial processes;
- Sustainable infrastructure, and:
- Sustainable urban development.

The four complementary course streams are built from courses from multiple departments and schools of the Faculty of Engineering.

Name of the sustainability-focused, graduate-level degree program (2nd program):
The McGill-Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Neotropical Environment Option - Master's or PhD

None
A brief description of the graduate degree program (2nd program):
The McGill-STRI Neotropical Environment Option (NEO) is a research-based option for Masters or PhD students in the departments of Anthropology, Biology, Bioresource Engineering , Geography, Natural Resource Sciences, Plant Science, and Political Science at McGill University. NEO is aimed at students who wish to focus their graduate research on environmental issues relevant to the Neotropics and Latin American countries. NEO favors interdisciplinary approaches to research and learning through the participation of researchers from McGill and from STRI. Students will complete their research in Latin America and NEO's core and complementary courses will be taught in Panama. NEO's educational approach seeks to facilitate a broader understanding of tropical environmental issues and the development of skills relevant to working in the tropics.

Whether applying to a Master or a PhD, students are expected to meet all the degree requirements of the department in which they are registered. In addition, NEO students will have to meet the specific requirements of the option.

Name of the sustainability-focused, graduate-level degree program (3rd program):
Master of Science (MSc) - Bioresource Engineering - Thesis (46 credits)

None
A brief description of the graduate degree program (3rd program):
The Department offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. research programs in various areas of bioresource engineering including: plant and animal environments; ecological engineering (ecosystem modelling, design, management, and remediation); water resources management (hydrology, irrigation, drainage, water quality); agricultural machinery, mechatronics, and robotics; food engineering and bio-processing; post-harvest technology; waste management and protection of the environment; bio-energy; and artificial intelligence. The Department also offers a Graduate Certificate in Bioresource Engineering (Integrated Water Resources Management). The Department has well equipped laboratories for conducting research in all these areas.

The interdisciplinary nature of bioresource engineering often requires candidates for higher degrees to work in association with, or attend courses given by, a number of other departments at both the McGill University Macdonald campus and the Downtown campus.

Minors, concentrations and certificates

Does the institution offer one or more graduate-level sustainability-focused minors, concentrations or certificates?:
Yes

Name of the graduate-level sustainability-focused minor, concentration or certificate:
Graduate Option in Environment

A brief description of the graduate minor, concentration or certificate:
The Bieler School of Environment coordinates a graduate Environment Option offered in partnership with several departments at McGill for students registered in a Master or Ph.D. program. As a complement to the unit’s expertise, the Option considers how various dimensions (scientific, social, legal, ethical, etc.) interact to define environment and sustainability issues. Students learn to explain and defend their research and thinking in a broader context and understand how knowledge is transferred into action with regard to the environment and sustainability. The program provides a forum whereby graduate students throughout the University bring their disciplinary perspectives together and enrich each other's learning through structured courses, seminars, discussions, and networking.

As a complement to their unit’s requirements, Environment Option students take the following courses (total = 9 credits):

ENVR 615 Interdisciplinary Approach Environment and Sustainability 3 Credits
One or both of the following courses (3 to 6 credits):
ENVR 610 Foundations of Environmental Policy 3 Credits
ENVR 614 Mobilizing Research for Sustainability 3 Credits

If taking only one of ENVR 610 / ENVR 614, 3 credits must be taken from:
ENVR 585 Readings in Environment 2 3 Credits
ENVR 630 Civilization and Environment 3 Credits
ENVR 680 Topics in Environment 4 3 Credits
or 3 credits at the 500 level or higher recommended by the Advisory Committee and approved by the Environment Option Committee. (see Environment Option Course Substitution Form)

The Graduate Environment Option can be undertaken within any of the following departments and degree programs:

Anthropology (MA)
Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences (PhD)
Biology (MSc and PhD)
Bioresource Engineering (MSc, MSc(A), PhD)
Entomology (PhD)
Experimental Medicine (MSc and PhD)
Geography (MA, MSc and PhD)
Law (LLM, LLM NonThesis)
Philosophy (PhD)
Plant Science (MSc and PhD)
Renewable Resources (PhD)
