MSU, like other state public entities, follows OSHA. MSU’s custom OHSMS includes policy, EHS committee, and programs such as Respiratory Protection, Chemical Hazard Communication, and the Occupational Hearing Conservation.
The University also has an Environmental, Health and Safety Policy.
MSU has an Environmental, Health and Safety Committee that meets quarterly, as well as several ESH-related committees such as the Institutional Biosafety Committee and the Radiation Safety Committee.
Additionally, the biosafety and radiation safety programs follow National Institute of Health/Centers for Disease Control (NIH/CDC) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations.

A brief description of the methodology used to track and calculate the number of recordable incidents of work-related injury or ill health :
All injuries at MSU are reported through the use of a First Report of Injury form, which is completed by the employee and/or the employee’s supervisor, verified as work-related by the supervisor, and processed by our Insurance Specialist at Safety & Risk Management. The Montana University System Workers Compensation Program contracts with a third party adjuster to process each claim, and to track parameters of the claim (lost time, medical, etc.) along with our local Insurance Specialist. This data is reviewed monthly to follow up with claims. Ultimately, the data from the claims database is used to track and calculate the number of recordable incidents and work-related injury and to complete the OSHA 300 record keeping form.
