Part 1. Hazardous waste minimization and disposal
Yes
A brief description of steps taken to reduce hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
Set up the operation of the campus temporary storage area the removal of waste chemicals, the identification card for the removal of hazardous industrial waste in the laboratory, and the establishment of waste management methods and education training in the laboratory to reduce campus risks and effective management.
A brief description of how the institution safely disposes of hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
Hazardous industrial wastes generated in various experimental sites of our school shall be dealt with according to laws and regulations for cleaning up industrial wastes and entrusted to qualified clean-up and disposal companies.
A brief description of any significant hazardous material release incidents during the previous three years, including volume, impact and response/remediation:
In 2018, in order to ensure the safe disposal of high-risk old gas cylinders in campus, a project plan was established in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Administration of the Executive Yuan and the Ministry of Education to smoothly dispose of the school’s old and unknown gas cylinders and solve the potential problems of high-risk old gas cylinders. To reduce the risk caused by potentially high hazardous gas cylinders in campus, it is the first case in higher education institutes in Taiwan, and its guideline for the operation is provided to the Ministry of Education for other universities in Taiwan to follow.
A brief description of any inventory system employed by the institution to facilitate the reuse or redistribution of laboratory chemicals:
Through the inventory management system, the laboratory sites, chemicals and personnels are registered for online management. The laboratory chemicals (toxic substances) exchange platform and the storage space is established to exchange chemicals that are no longer used in laboratories. This product placement and exchange platform enhances the effective use of chemicals among laboratories and avoids excess inventory of unused chemicals on campus, which in turn, improves the utilization and safety of chemical storage. The amount of toxic chemicals used in 2020 is reduced 5.5% compared with that of 2019.
