B.S. in Civil Engineering
A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:
Civil engineers are problem solvers, meeting the challenges of community planning, water supply, structures, traffic congestion, energy needs, pollution, and infrastructure improvements. Societal needs, economic conditions and public safety are paramount in the work accomplished by civil engineers. Modern tools such as computer aided design (CAD), geographical information systems (GIS) and computer modeling are a necessity in all areas of civil engineering.
Civil engineers are sought by both private companies and public agencies for a variety of professional positions. Many work for engineering consulting firms or construction companies as design engineers, field engineers and project managers. They also join government agencies to oversee transportation, water supply, environmental protection, and resource management. Graduates are equally prepared to pursue MS and PhD degrees in allied fields, as well as business, management and law degrees.
The curriculum is structured to provide a broad undergraduate education with students taking courses in each of the recognized areas of civil engineering. The first two years focus on mathematics and basic science courses to provide a solid foundation for the engineering science and design courses that are taken in the junior and senior years. The program culminates in a two-semester capstone design course sequence in the senior year. The curriculum is computer intensive and includes a number of laboratory courses that reinforce concepts and principles taught in the classroom.

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (2nd program):
The Environmental Sciences B.S. program focuses on the role of the physical science in the protection of the environment and pollution remediation. Ultimately, the program is designed to prepare graduates for professional positions in the environmental education and/or to continue their education at the graduate level.
The program will also prepare students to pursue positions related to the environment in the fields of law, business, sociology, health and political science. Students in the Environmental Science program are encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities provided to students, such as research experience for undergraduates (REU), cooperative education and internships.

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (3rd program):
Mechanical engineers utilize their knowledge of materials, system design and control, and production methods to design complex systems such as aircraft, power plants, and combustion engines. They are also involved in developing conventional and alternate energy sources including fossil fuel, geothermal, solar, hydroelectric, and nuclear power generation systems. There are currently excellent employment opportunities for mechanical engineers in a broad spectrum of fields including energy conversion, CAD/CAM systems, robotics, manufacturing processes and biomedical applications.
The mechanical engineering curriculum provides an opportunity for the student to develop proficiency in a technical specialty within the broad field of mechanical engineering. This is accomplished by means of a minimum of 12 credits of electives emphasizing mechanical design, energy systems, manufacturing processes, materials engineering, or biomedical engineering or by selecting courses from a wide variety of approved electives. Outstanding state-of-the-art computer, instrumentation, power generation and control laboratories are available in the Mechanical Engineering Center to offer unique support to the undergraduate program.

The Minor in Environmental Studies and Sustainability (ESS) seeks to provide students with interdisciplinary training to enable engagement with some of the most pressing social, ecological, and technological challenges of the 21st century. The ESS Minor is designed to complement the education that comprises a Major course of study and to enable all academic programs to add an ESS component. Several departments at NJIT deliver courses that contribute to the ESS Minor. The ESS Minor aims to provide students interested in environmental studies and sustainability with a centralized advising destination.
