North Carolina General Statutes, 143-58.2 and 143-58.3, outline goals for recycled content purchases. The 1999 Executive Order 156 mandated environmentally preferable purchasing that included recycled content materials.
Building on these mandates, NC State stated green purchasing as a priority in the 2000 Environmental Sustainability Task Force Recommendations.
In 2011, NC State additionally stated environmentally and socially responsible purchases as a strategy of the NC State University Sustainability Strategic Plan (http://sustainability.ncsu.edu/team/plan). The Sustainability Strategic Plan additionally calls for a sustainability policy that includes purchasing guidelines.
