A brief description of programs, policies, infrastructure investments, outreach efforts, and/or other factors that contributed to the diversion rate:
Walkway Recycling: Over 100 Walkway recycling bins were paired next to existing trash containers across campus to reduce the amount of cans and bottles entering the waste stream. Composting: University Dining and Waste Reduction and Recycling (WRR) implemented a food waste diversion program at three full-scale dining halls on campus. E-Recycling: E-Recycling bins were purchased and placed at every on-campus building including residence halls . E-Recycling bins are maintained by WRR and are used for the collection of small electronics, batteries, CD’s, ink cartridges and other computer components. NC State purchased electronics are recycled or resold on campus through NC State University Materials Management. All electronics are recycled through a reputable electronic recycling company with the following certifications: R2 (Responsible Recycling, the standard facilitated by US EPA), RIOS (Recycling Industry Operating Standards developed by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI)), ISO 9001 (standard of quality services and products), ISO 14001 (standard of environmental management system), OHSAS 18001 (standard for employee health and safety), EPA ID number NCR000149658, R2 Certification, RIOS Certification, Insurance Limits, ISO 9001, OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001 E-Recycling Events: Partnered with Centennial Campus and conducted two E-Recycling Events open to the public. These events collected 22,380 lbs of spent electronics. Waste Reduction at large and small events: WRR provides educational support and resources in assistance with major events to reduce waste including: Krispy Kreme Challenge, Friday Fest, Rec Fest, The Big Event, Earth Day, Race for the Cure, Aids Alliance, Service Raleigh, Rubbage Ride, Move-in and Move-out, NC APPA Conference. WE Recycle: 38,020 lbs of cans and bottles recycled. WE Recycle includes a full scale educational campaign including a video played during football games. The WE Recycle program is fully institutionalized and utilizes 10 or more volunteers to support the program each game. America Recycles Day: WRR held a paper shredding event for campus which recycled 11,320 lbs of paper. This nationally recognized day is dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and to buy recycled products. Office Supply Re-use Programs: Unwanted office supplies are collected throughout the year by building occupants and are stored by WRR. Periodic “Office Supply Give-away” events are advertised and held at various campus locations where students, staff and faculty can obtain free office supplies. Move In: Additional cardboard dumpsters and signage are placed on campus for students to use as they unpackage new items or discard moving boxes. Move Out: “Wolf Pack N Go”: Storage containers are staged in accessible areas around residence halls throughout campus. Last year, 18,656 lbs of reusable items from student move-out was collected and donated Goodwill and Habitat for Humanity. This program is a collaboration with University Housing to reduce waste as students move out at the end of the year. Recyclemania: RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. NC State University has competed in all categories of this event. Caught Green Handed: Students staff and faculty were rewarded for recycling throughout the recyclemania contest period. Prizes included a drawing for a $100 gift card. One Less Cup: University Dining Facilities now offer a 10 cent discount off of any fountain or coffee drink at campus stores and coffee shops. This initiative promotes reuse and reduction of waste on campus.
