The University Diversity Advisory Committee advises and assists the Vice Provost for Institutional Equity and Diversity in the design and implementation of strategies that advance diversity at NC State. Such diversity strategies will (1) enhance access and opportunity for all in order to create a diverse campus community; (2) enrich the educational and workplace experience for all members of the university community; (3) promote personal and professional growth of all students, faculty, and staff; (4) foster mutual respect, valuing of differences, as well as cross-cultural understanding; and (5) prepare leaders for a competitive global community.
Responsibilities
Committee members' duties include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:
- Periodically review and recommend changes to the university diversity strategic plan,
- Facilitate the implementation of existing diversity strategies, programs, and initiatives,
- Periodically review and recommend changes to the campus diversity assessment plan,
- Assist in highlighting, recognizing, and publicizing diversity initiatives to promote campus-wide cooperation and participation,
- Share and vet diversity strategies, initiatives and information with their campus communities and constituents,
- Foster a climate that promotes a better understanding of, and an appreciation for, diversity within their sphere of influence and encourage others to do the same,
- Help educate members of the campus community about diversity issues and concerns in order to enhance understanding, respect and appreciation for all members of the campus community.

A brief description of the diversity office:
The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED) is committed to fostering an inclusive, accessible, and diverse intellectual and cultural campus experience related to the mission of North Carolina State University (NC State). The OIED facilitates efforts to ensure equity and opportunity, increases awareness of diversity issues through education, and strengthens relationships across diverse groups. Through these efforts, the OIED promotes cultural competence development, thereby fostering a welcoming and respectful campus. By providing guidance, programming, and outreach to constituent groups and the community, and by adhering to accountability and compliance standards, the OIED prepares NC State students, faculty, and staff for local, state, national, and global collaboration.

To foster an inclusive campus community of students, faculty, and staff who value and inspire personal, academic, and professional excellence.
Goals
• Cultivate a community in which individuals demonstrate respect toward one another.
• Facilitate campus efforts to increase participation, retention, and success of students, faculty, and staff from historically underrepresented groups.
• Ensure that NC State is an equitable and inclusive environment, one that is free from prohibited discrimination and harassment.
• Provide effective awareness and enrichment programming to the NC State community.

A brief description of the diversity coordinator's position:
The Vice Provost for Institutional Equity and Diversity has the primary responsibility of helping campus leaders establish and maintain diversity and inclusive excellence across the university. The Vice Provost will promote a comprehensive and holistic approach to diversity by helping campus leaders:
• increase the participation, retention and success of historically underrepresented students, faculty and staff.
• institutionalize diversity across all university functions and campus operations.
• create and maintain a welcoming campus climate.
• encourage faculty to infuse diversity into the curriculum.
• develop and implement continuous diversity planning and assessment.
• celebrate and value all aspects and dimensions of human diversity.
In addition, the Vice Provost for Institutional Equity and Diversity will help promote inclusive excellence by enhancing campus collaborations with diversity-oriented organizations in the community, by encouraging institutional diversity research, and by assessing institutional diversity outcomes. The Vice Provost also facilitates communication across campus about how diversity is at the core of the University's academic mission.

As of 2011, the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED)brings together the offices of Equal Opportunity & Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, and Multicultural Student Affairs together with three campus centers: the African American Cultural Center; the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) Center; and the Women's Center. There are 36 staff in OIED. Within the Diversity Section there are 6 staff.
