A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:
In addition to faculty and staff programs mentioned under the Diversity and Affordability section of this STARS submission, NC State is home to the award-winning Equal Opportunity Institute program designed to provide university students and employees a means for developing a comprehensive understanding of equal opportunity issues. Institute participants broaden their knowledge base and also learn how this information can be applied in their day-to-day activities and interactions. Through their individual and collective efforts, Equal Opportunity Institute participants help NC State and our community build a better place to work, learn, and live.
This unique certificate program is designed for both employees and students of NC State. This program is also available to individuals from the general public. Participants learn about equal opportunity, diversity, affirmative action, discrimination and harassment, and university policies and procedures through their completion of an individually designed education plan.
This program is sponsored by the North Carolina State University Office for Institutional Equity & Diversity in conjunction with Human Resources and the Center for Student Leadership, Ethics & Public Service.
NC State additionally participates in the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) that states, "...an effective diversity training program must teach conflict resolution skills; effective listening; how to manage dialogue across group lines and a rationale for creating a welcoming workplace that becomes everyone's responsibility." In order to bring such training to our campus, NC State established a Campus Affiliate, through which we present the Building Bridges program on our campus (http://www.ncsu.edu/ncbi/index.php).
