Student Groups

A brief description of active student groups focused on sustainability:
Most recently, an environmental focused club, named EcoLogic was formed by students. They are seeking to assist with sustainability efforts and outreach on campus. Prior, a Student Environmental Club, named EARTH, met as recently as 2015. Standing for 'Environmental Action and Restoring the Heritage' they work to increase action regarding environmental and social issues on campus. In part, this club was transformed into the Student Leadership Sustainability Board that, and the campus is encouraged to attend its weekly meetings to get involved in its outreach campaigns.
Other active sustainability-related groups include the African Cultural Empowerment, Feminist Alliance, La Raza Unida, LGBTQIA+ Club, and Women in Science and Engineering (WISE).

Gardens and Farms

We are proudly hosting the newest Seattle City P-Patch, representing the first partnership between the City and Washington State to make an organic, community garden.
In recent years, NSC also partnered with a local CSA, Oxbow, and served as a drop off point.

The Sustainability Board hosts yearly Earth Day Symposiums that includes presentations and tabling from local non-profits. The Board also hosted a Sustainable Food Forum on 2/23/17, featuring student group presentation, and guest speakers. Social Justice related events include a quarterly speaker series focused on race.

Wilderness and Outdoors Programs

An Environmental Science instructor regularly takes his class and other interested students to learn about glaciers and rock formations on a tour of Mount St. Helens. Sustainability principles are essential to all of this instructor's courses. As recently as 2015, the NSC hiking club organizes hiking, backpacking, wilderness outings for any campus community member that is interested.

The Sustainability Office supports instruction by providing co-curricular support. For instance, in 2016-17, an instructor focused on Sustainable Food in their English courses, and the Sustainability Office and Sustainability Board held monthly meetings on sustainable food, organized a student survey, and hosted a Sustainable Food Forum on February 23, 2017 with guest speakers.
