A brief description of the institution’s formal participatory or shared governance bodies:
NIU has several governing bodies. These governing groups, or bodies, meet regularly. They discuss issues affecting their members and the entire campus. Each group's leaders attend the other groups' meetings. The groups also inform the Board of Trustees of issues that affect the people they represent.
This system of shared governance ensures that all the voices of the university are heard.

Supportive Professional Staff Council: Advocates for and promotes the interests of supportive professional staff employees.
2)Operating Staff Council: Advocates for and promotes the interests of operating staff employees.
3) Student Association: Represents current students.
