A brief description of the sustainable operations and maintenance policy/program and/or O+M rating system(s) used:
NSCC's sustainability policy states that BOMA BEST is to be used as a benchmarking and performance measurement tool for sustainable operation and maintenance of our portfolio of owned-and-operated facilities. NSCC has implemented the guidelines and best practices from BOMA BEST to inform development of Campus-specific management plans for energy and water conservation, green cleaning, indoor air quality, occupant service requests, and waste auditing. NSCC campuses have been BOMA BEST certified since 2008, and were most recently re-certified under BOMA BEST version 3.0 in 2019.
BOMABEST is an assessment and certification program for commercial buildings in Canada. The program provides a consistent framework for owners and managers to critically assess six key areas of environmental performance and management: Energy, Water, Waste Reduction and Site, Emissions and Effluents, Indoor Environment, and Environmental Management System. It has five levels of Certification; Certified, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The BOMABEST assessment modules provide an on-line questionnaire specific to building types; access energy and environmental performance and management of the building. An on-site tour of the assessed building is conducted by third-party verification. Nova Scotia Community College currently has three buildings rated Silver (70-79%), 10 buildings rated Gold (80-89%), and two buildings rated Platinum (90-100%).
Because leased property (132,429 square feet) is not owned by NSCC, it is not able to be BOMA BEST certified. All operational attributes remain the same as property owned within our portfolio.
