Student sustainability research incentives 

Does the institution have an ongoing program to encourage students in multiple disciplines or academic programs to conduct sustainability research?:
Yes

A brief description of the student sustainability research program:
The undergraduate Environmental Design program introduced the Award for Excellence in Sustainable Design during the 2022-23 Academic Year, which is a financial incentive that encourages and recognizes student effort towards sustainable design.

The graduate program Strategic Foresight and Innovation includes a SFIN-6012 Business Design course combined with SFIN-6014 Leading Innovation which is co-taught and encourages students to take on research consulting projects with organizations and social enterprises. Past research have included:
- Viable operational model for a permaculture educational site that can exist for generations into the future.
- A future Zero Waste system at OCAD U

The Sustainable Futures Faculty Fellowship (SF3) Program aims to deepen student inquiry and learning into sustainability by supporting faculty to pursue, document, and share their research findings on innovative pedagogical approaches towards sustainability at the undergraduate level.

Fellows receive a course release to:


Develop and implement sustainability pedagogy for an undergraduate course.
Conduct course-based research to capture the impacts of their sustainability pedagogy on student learning.
Together with the SF3 Team, draft and submit a Research Ethics Board submission.
Participate in a mutually agreed upon schedule of research meetings with the SF3 Team for the duration of the research.
Together with the SF3 Team, participate in knowledge mobilization activities to share the results of the course-based research during the 2023-24 Academic Year.
Design and lead one professional learning activity for OCAD U community, based on the research project, to build awareness of promising practices for sustainability pedagogy in art and design education.
Make one presentation within their Faculty to share the research findings, likely upon conclusion of the project.
Participate in and provide updates to the Sustainability Community of Practice where appropriate.
Liaise with faculty through presentations and curriculum committees, Faculty Council and other committees as relevant.

T&P (Tenure & Promotion) processes at OCAD U are framed by the priorities and objectives of the current Academic & Strategic Plan – which references interdisciplinarity directly in the Mission, Priority 1 (B) "Continue to push the boundaries of interdisciplinary art and design education, teaching and research" and Priority 6 which describes that "OCAD University will shape the culture and economy of Canada by bridging disciplines, industries and cultures through welcoming spaces and vibrant relationships".

The OCAD U Library has a sustainability-focused research guide for resources that support sustainability research.

The OCAD U Library also provides students with access to an online materials directory which identifies sustainability attributes, through the Material Connexion Library. https://www.materialconnexion.online/database/customer/account/login

The Material Innovation Centre (MIC) supports materials selection practices and access to experimental materials. The MIC is intended to hold and display all different materials for reference for all programs. This Centre is to be a growing, changing space for all.
