Yes

Name of the campaign:
Salvage Yard

A brief description of the campaign:
The Salvage Yard supports OCADU’s effort to move to zero waste! Immediately after GradEx and for locker cleanout, students bring projects and materials to a central location where staff help break down large materials into components for reuse and recycling where possible. This event enables OCAD U to raise awareness about material lifecycles and to collect data on waste volumes and types, to learn about our material uses and work to further reduce our impact in coming years. Usable materials will be saved and redistributed to the ReUse Depots. The campaign is also directed towards employees by encouraging faculty early on in the academic year to take curricular approaches to reducing material waste in class projects, as well to encourage staff studio technicians to raise awareness about material life cycles and to participate in the event itself. Studio staff are key not only as participants in considering redistributing materials for reuse but in their role interfacing with students and finding ways to reduce material offcuts in their practices and providing material options that consider biodegradability, low-toxicity, durability, feasibility of reuse and recycling, and other sustainability factors. These discussions take place, for example, during regular GradEx Committee meetings which are key spaces for planning ahead of OCAD U's largest exhibition event of the year, which features student projects.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
Materials were separated into types (e.g. metals, MDF, scrap wood, styrofoam, cardboard, fine paper, glass, concrete) and weighed. The measured materials were then made available for free to be reused or for specialized recycling where possible to capture a landfill diversion rate. This event supported both students as material users and staff who directed students around best practices for material choices and installation/de-installation techniques.
