Mandate
The Sustainability Committee has the broad mandate (academic, operational and administrative) and the autonomy needed to support, promote and advance sustainability initiatives. The Committee recognizes that the core principles of ecological responsibility, social wellness, and financial wellbeing are essential in all aspects of university life, and as a responsible member of the municipal, provincial and national higher education community requires committed leadership, stewardship and community engagement at all levels.
The Committee will develop a Sustainability Policy for review and approval by the University Senate and Board of Governors. The Committee will also develop and oversee implementation of multi-year and annual sustainability plans, subject to Senate and Board of Governors approval, and work to ensure the availability of resources to implement institutional objectives, integration of those goals
into other institutional plans; informing a framework for change; monitoring and evaluating progress, and advancing an institution-wide adoption that includes measurable outcomes that advance the core principles of sustainability and environmental stewardship. This Committee will advocate for communities that are life sustaining, be they educational, industrial, economic, social or otherwise,
and will champion innovative solutions and divergent) thinking that advances sustainability.

The Office of Diversity, Equity & Sustainability Initiatives (ODESI) has a broad organizational change mandate to work collaboratively towards:
- Creating or supporting opportunities on campus to advance understanding and promote social change through collective and critical reflection, knowledge generation and mobilization, and art and design creation
- Coordinating, informing or supporting organizational change strategies that are designed to acknowledge and redress systemic, structural and historical disadvantage in employment and educational policy and practice, promote a culture of inclusion and advance sustainability.
- Providing information, training and educational opportunities, and capacity building in the areas of equity, accessibility, human rights and sustainable practices.
- Advocating for high standards in policies, procedures and practices in the areas of human rights, equity and sustainability
- Ensuring a fair and effective administration of OCAD U’s human rights policies and providing subject matter expertise on the principles of human rights, equity and accessibility and related obligations in the resolution of complaints.

The Advisor, Strategic Sustainability works with the Sustainability Committee and across all departments to integrate sustainability into unit-level and institutional planning, decision-making, and reporting.

Recent accomplishments include:
- Green Cleaning Contract with 100% third-party EcoLogo certified cleaning agents.
- Establishment of a research network, the Global Centre for Climate Action.
- On-campus sustainability-focused experiential learning placements to support student professional practice.
- Faculty Fellowship program to support pedagogical research into sustainable approaches to teaching.
- Established a Pollinator Garden.
- Sustainability-focused intensive field course that brings together environmental design, permaculture, and Afro-Caribbean arts practices.

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Manager, Diversity, Equity & Sustainability Initiatives, the Senior Coordinator, Sustainability Initiatives is responsible for promoting and supporting sustainability and related initiatives and strategies in support of an institution-wide Sustainability Plan to build OCAD University’s (OCAD U) reputation as a thought leader on the role of art, design and creativity in the advancement of sustainability and nurture a community of relationships at OCAD U, locally and globally.
Summary of Responsibilities:
• Facilitate overall sustainability strategic planning and the implementation of multi-year plans and scorecards in collaboration with key stakeholders
• In conjunction with the Manager, Diversity, Equity & Sustainability Initiatives, develop a multi-year institution-wide Sustainability Plan that promotes, supports and integrates the institutional goals set out in the Academic and Strategic Plans
• Directly advise members of senior leadership on best practices, institutional strategy/policy, and change management strategy through in-person meetings and briefings
• Draft correspondence and information for senior leadership
• Provide mentorship support to management-level staff
• Research and recommend revisions to business process (i.e. procurement)
• Provide recommendations and strategic advice to all administrative and academic units to embed sustainability within their portfolios
• Working closely with OCAD U faculty, staff and the Educational Development team, support the development, implementation and evaluation of initiatives and research projects intended to enhance teaching and learning through the integration of sustainability concepts and pedagogies.
• Provide consultations to faculty on course design and delivery.
• Develop and deliver training and resources for faculty, students, and staff to support the incorporation of sustainability in teaching and learning.
• Review and develop appropriate sustainability specific resource materials that promote and support the institutional goals set out in the Academic and Strategic Plans
• Through research, reading, and participation in professional associations, stay current with advancements and trends in teaching and learning in post-secondary education with an emphasis on art and design education.

Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in a related field or equivalent (i.e. Social and/or Environmental Science, Art & Design)
• Minimum of four (4) years’ experience in policy development and community engagement
• Demonstrated experience with developing an integrative approach to equity and sustainability to create opportunities for building deep research, learning and community collaborations
• Demonstrated experience in facilitating sustainable practices and/or initiatives
• Demonstrated experience in project management; Project Management Program (PMP) certification an asset
• Demonstrated experience creating and developing community engagement
• Strong computer and administrative skills
• Strong organizational, interpersonal, customer service and oral communication skills
• Demonstrate strong written communication skills, including sustainability briefing notes and policy development
• Demonstrated experience with developing and implementing systems to measure progress of sustainability initiatives
