A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :
Treated Effluent Water (TEW) – Heat Recovery System
The Okanagan College Centre for Learning utilizes Treated Effluent Water (or sewage outflow) as a heating source. The building uses dedicated heat recovery chillers to recover or reject low-grade heat from an existing TEW piping system. This system originates at the Kelowna Water Treatment Plant and dumps into Okanagan Lake.
The use of this low grade heat combined with dedicated heat recovery chillers has allowed the project to reduce capital costs, improve system efficiency, reduce its carbon footprint and use a renewable energy source. The sewage outfall system is always available (sewage treatment plant) and in fact is planning on expanding as the City grows.
