A brief description of how the institution ensures that its lowest-paid workers (including contractors, if applicable) receive sustainable compensation:
Definition of Sustainable Income
Statistics Canada uses a relative measure of sustainability in determining an income threshold (called Low income cut-offs – LICO’s) where families below the threshold would spend 20% more of their income on food clothing and shelter than the average family would spend.
The weighted average LICO threshold for our college region is $18,421 for a single person.
Okanagan College Wage Rates
Okanagan College staff (other than management) are governed by collective agreements, negotiated at the provincial level and controlled by the Provincial Government. The lowest annualized salary paid under these collective agreements is $30,438 per year - 65% greater than the LICO figure (above) determining low income for the area .
