Majors and Degree Programs

Does the institution offer at least one sustainability-focused major, degree program, or the equivalent for undergraduate students (I.e. an interdisciplinary academic program that concentrates on sustainability as an integrated concept)?:
Yes

Name of the sustainability-focused undergraduate degree program:
Energy Systems Engineering

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:
Students in the Honours Bachelor of Engineering in Energy Systems Engineering program will learn the skills to design and develop tomorrow’s energy systems. This degree program is the first stand-alone program of its kind in Canada. The program was developed to meet the rapidly increasing demand for graduates with the knowledge and skills required to help Canada and the rest of the world meet the terms of the Kyoto agreement, while ensuring that the growing consumption of energy can be satisfied economically and with minimal impact on the environment. The curriculum provides students with an understanding of the principles and applications of the full range of energy systems and technologies, from traditional fossil-fuelled energy systems to alternative energy technologies. This includes the production, storage, distribution and utilization of energy.

Name of the sustainability-focused, undergraduate degree program (2nd program):
Physics

None
A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (2nd program):
Our programs offer a strong foundation in each science discipline and specializations within them that are relevant to the real world. You will learn in modern, well-equipped laboratories, and our commitment to interdisciplinary teaching will provide you with personal attention from professors and staff. Force, motion, light, sound, electricity, magnetism and the structure of matter lie at the heart of natural sciences and technology. You will benefit from exposure to cutting-edge research in renewable energy, semiconductor devices, microelectronics, materials science, biophysics, computational physics and astrophysics. You can pursue the comprehensive program or one of two specializations: Astrophysics specialization You will gain a strong knowledge base in the underlying physics of astronomy as well as specific tools and techniques of astrophysics. Energy and Environmental Physics specialization Our specialization emphasizes alternative and conventional energy and the scientific principles underlying the development of novel and economical means of generating and harvesting energy, while simultaneously minimizing the environmental impact. Management program If you are interested in managerial and leadership roles, you should consider applying for the five-year Bachelor of Science and Management (Honours) program in your upper years of study. Graduates gain a solid foundation in the key functional areas of business and management, including finance, accounting, operations, project management and marketing.

Political Science - Community Development and Policy Studies

None
A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (3rd program):
The Faculty of Social Science and Humanities (FSSH) is guided by a strong commitment to our students, a creative mindset and an awareness of the local, regional, national and global world in which the university exists. We are ready to partner with you so you can take your place as an independent thinker and an active and contributing leader in a rapidly changing social, political and natural environment. Who decides how tax dollars are spent? Why do recessions occur? Why do people protest against free trade agreements? What makes a social protest movement successful? How do we revitalize a community? Why would the government cut funding to support education? How can understanding these issues make the world a better place? Explore these and other relevant issues in the Community Development and Policy Studies program. Our program emphasizes strategies for creating sustainable community development policies, which target improved quality of life and address important community justice and planning issues. This interdisciplinary major draws on faculty strengths in political science, sociology, public policy, history, geography, philosophy, legal studies and economics to give you a multidisciplinary integrated background.
