Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions

Gross GHG emissions

Gross Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions:
Performance year Baseline year
Gross Scope 1 GHG emissions from stationary combustion 2,484.97 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 2,103 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Gross Scope 1 GHG emissions from other sources 191 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 271 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions from imported electricity 703.67 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 1,269.10 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions from imported thermal energy 13.74 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Total 3,393.38 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 3,643.10 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Carbon sinks

Figures needed to determine net carbon sinks:
Performance year Baseline year
Third-party verified carbon offsets purchased 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Institution-catalyzed carbon offsets generated 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Carbon storage from on-site composting 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Carbon storage from non-additional sequestration 3.85 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Carbon sold or transferred 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Net carbon sinks 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

If total performance year carbon sinks are greater than zero, provide:

A brief description of the carbon sinks, including vendor, project source, verification program and contract timeframes (as applicable):
In 2022 we planted 100 trees which equates to 3.85 tonnes of carbon offset.

Average 0.0385 tonnes of carbon offset per tree- Enlighten Reference.

Adjusted net GHG emissions

Adjusted net Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions:
Performance year Baseline year
Adjusted net GHG emissions 3,393.38 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 3,643.10 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Performance and baseline periods

Start and end dates of the performance year and baseline year (or three-year periods):
Performance year Baseline year
Start date Jan. 1, 2022 Jan. 1, 2011
End date Dec. 31, 2022 Dec. 31, 2011

A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:
Coincides with Ministry of Energy mandated- reporting schedule; 2011/2012 data was used when creating the University Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan and is used as the baseline.

GHG Scope 1 from other sources (2021/2022) emissions from 2 OCIS truck fleet vehicles and the shared Registrar/Athletics van. Two OCIS cars are full electric (electricity accounted for in scope 2).

Part 1. Reduction in GHG emissions per person

Weighted campus users

Figures needed to determine “Weighted Campus Users”:
Performance year Baseline year
Number of students resident on-site 0 0
Number of employees resident on-site 0 0
Number of other individuals resident on-site 0 0
Total full-time equivalent student enrollment 10,139 8,347
Full-time equivalent of employees 749 604
Full-time equivalent of students enrolled exclusively in distance education 385 121.50
Weighted Campus Users 7,877.25 6,622.13

Metrics used in scoring for Part 1

Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user:
Performance year Baseline year
Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user 0.43 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0.55 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Percentage reduction in adjusted net Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user from baseline:
21.70

Part 2. GHG emissions per unit of floor area

Performance year floor area

Gross floor area of building space, performance year:
121,402.97 Gross square meters

Floor area of energy intensive building space, performance year:
Floor area
Laboratory space 16,124.47 Square meters
Healthcare space 0 Square meters
Other energy intensive space 3,238.32 Square meters

EUI-adjusted floor area, performance year:
156,890.16 Gross square meters

Metric used in scoring for Part 2

Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per unit of EUI-adjusted floor area, performance year:
0.02 MtCO2e per square meter

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives:
Continuously upgrading old equipment and lighting to more efficient alternatives along with increasing renewable energy sources on campus along with carbon sequestration through tree planting. In 2020, we planted 4410 trees which continue to offset 169.79 tonnes of carbon every year. We are also electrifying our fleet and adding more EV charging station to campus.
