A brief description of the institution's initiatives to shift individual attitudes and practices in regard to energy efficiency:
Pitzer College encourages students, staff and faculty to conserve energy. Residence Hall windows and doors have air conditioner and heater automatic shutoff contacts that shutoff the system when the window or door is opened. And each December during winter break the entire college unplugs and shuts down all computers, peripherals, fridges, heat and air conditioning.
A brief description of energy use standards and controls employed by the institution:
-Heating set point is 68 degrees F
-Cooling set point is 74 degrees F
-Cooling set point is 74 degrees F
A brief description of Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting and other energy-efficient lighting strategies employed by the institution:
All buildings and site light fixtures were converted from fluorescent to LED lighting.
A brief description of passive solar heating, geothermal systems, and related strategies employed by the institution:
7 residence halls have rooftop solar panels.
Pitzer, Atherton, and Sanborn Residence Halls have solar panels which provide about 28,000 kilowatt hours of renewable energy annually.
Skandera, East and West Residence Halls solar panels generate about 118,000 kilowatt hours and reducing CO2 emissions by more than 300,000 pounds per year.
