A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting, including the timeframe for when the analysis was conducted and how a representative sample was reached, if applicable:
Polytechnique's student and employee commute modal splits were calculated buy using data generated through the 10th Origin-Destination survey of the Agence Métropolitaine des Transports (AMT, Metropolitan Transport Authority) of Montreal. This survey was conducted from September 4th to December 21th, 2013. It surveyed 188700 persons, composing more than 78800 households of the Montreal region. This sample was generated randomly from the list of subscribers to a residential phone service. This Origin-Destination survey is used as a reference by various public bodies that need data on transportation habits in the Montreal region. Researchers from Polytechnique's Chaire Mobilité (Mobility research chair) consider that this survey was conducted using the best practices available in this field.
As they are partners of the AMT, researchers from Polytechnique's Chaire Mobilité have access to the data generated by the survey, which contains more than 800 respondents from the Polytechnique community (students and employees). The data entered in the STARS reporting tool were thus calculated from this sample. As it was randomly generated and comprises a number of respondents that represents more than 10% of the number of full-time occupants of Polytechnique (7330 full-time occupants in 2013-2014), this sample is considered highly representative of the population.
