In March 2017, an exchange student chose to do his undergraduate thesis on the energy consumption of escalators in Polytechnique. He studied their use and energy consumption. He proposed different scenarios to optimize the total consumption. They are under evaluation, the idea would be to do a pilot project.

Every year, in the Sustainable Developement for engineers course (DDI8001), the lecturer asks the students to think about a sustainable project or a project to improve sustainability on campus. Many students choose to think about ways to integrate urban agriculture on the little land that Polytechnique has to offer (one team chose this project during the winter of 2019, trying to develop a small parcel on the green roof). Although until now, no propositions have been turned into real projects, it is interesting to see how urban agriculture and land use interest many within the Polytechnique community.

During the fall of 2016, a team of students chose to do an environmental LCA of the way waste is managed at Polytechnique as part of their LCA course (DDI8003). The team shared their results with the entire class and the Sustainability Office.

During the winter of 2017, in the second year capstone project in industrial engineering, it was decided that the students were going to work with a non profit organisation called WASA Games, to develop a game for children with disabilities (collaboration with Sainte-Justine Children's Hospital). WASA Games is an NPO whose mission is to help increase community awareness on sustainability (above all in cities) through games.

The Darlington ecological corridor is an ongoing project aimed at ecologically connecting the old and new campuses of Université de Montréal. This project is led by Alexandre Beaudoin, a biologist and biodiversity advisor at the Université de Montréal’s Sustainable Development Unit.
In the design phase, Alexandre worked with Anouk Desjardins, P.Eng., a lecturer at Polytechnique Montréal, to get the community involved.
Anouk and Alexandre devised an engineering mandate for the final year capstone project in the civil engineering program, one of the last courses of the engineering curriculum that places the student in a real-world project. Polytechnique students worked on this projet in 2017 and 2018.
