A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory (including the types of faculty and staff included as researchers):
Every year since 2016, the Sustainability Office updates a list of professors and researchers engaged in sustainability research. First, they are identified on the basis of their affiliation with research groups that have a clear focus on sustainability issues, such as the CIRODD (Interdisciplinary Research Center on the Operationalization of Sustainable Development, http://www.cirodd.org) or the EDDEC Institute (Environment, Sustainable Development and Circular Economy, http://instituteddec.org).
The list of Polytechnique's research units and centers is also updated every year to identify those engaged in sustainability research, which also helps to identify additional professors and researchers. Finally, the expertise webpage of each professor and researcher (available at http://www.polymtl.ca/recherche/rc/en/index.php) is reviewed to identify sustainability-focused research areas and projects, and thus validate the entire list.
As professors and researchers engaged in sustainability research were listed, research associates working with them were identified. When these research associates' main field of work was sustainability-related, they were added to the list as staff engaged in sustainability research. Graduate students are not counted here.
The list proposed here is based on the latest list used in the 2017-2018 Sustainability Report (for the report, the list was made during the summer of 2018). The postdoctoral researchers were removed. When new information was available, the list was updated to reflect the situation as of April 2019 (new research associates, departures etc.).
