Campus EcoChallenge

A brief description of the campaign:
In November 2021, we launched a campus EcoChallenge and created a team which follows the worldwide challenge: https://campus.ecochallenge.org/

A description of the challenge is as follows: "Campus Ecochallenge is a customizable sustainability engagement program for class and campus engagement. Each team can set their own challenge period to meet the goals of their campus initiatives. Participants track and share their progress online in a robust platform and earn points for taking action. The combination of collective action, camaraderie, and friendly competition makes change a little easier — and a lot more fun. Campus Ecochallenge provides tools and inspiration to turn intention into action, and gives participants a fun and social way to think about and act on proven solutions that make a difference for you, your community, and the planet."

In November 2021, we engaged 24 of our students, staff, and faculty in the initial launch of the challenge. As the challenge progresses each month, we are actively recruiting others from our community to join our team.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
Positive impacts are tracked by the EcoChallenge system. The figures below reflect the 24 participating individuals between the period November 1 - December 1, 2021.

Name of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Free Store Fridays and Green Moveout

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Free Store Fridays (FSF) began in September 2021 as a product of two student ideas. The purpose of FSF is (1) to increase student, staff, and faculty engagement with the campus Free Store; (2) to provide a dedicated weekday for collecting food or clothing donations from any campus contributor; (3) to use the Sustainability Lounge as a space that fosters social connection and inclusion. During each Friday, FSF participants are provided a free soup cooked with local ingredients while they browse items donated to the store. Our current student project leader has given presentations to the Sustainability Center about the important role of the Free Store in resisting against fast fashion culture and the textile industry.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Since the launch of this campaign, we have had a total of nearly 160 participants (an average of 10-20 weekly visitor). Some staff and faculty have collaborated with us to co-host their own event along with Free Store Friday. In November, we had a staff member teach students how to use the sewing machines to create their own scented heating pads with old pillow cases plus lavender and corn from the campus gardens.

We have also just begun weighing donations given to the Free Store in November as a way of measuring items diverted from landfill. Currently, have a total weight of 168 lbs. of items donated, and we will maintain track of the in-and-out flux of material from the store.
