A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
The course inventory was gathered using the assistance of the university’s Administrative Operations Integrated Analytics (AOIA) team. AOIA pulled a list of the all the courses offered at the university from the course catalog maintained by the Registrar; additionally, AOIA was able to pull the available course description and learning objectives for each course. The data set was shared with the Campus Planning, Architecture and Sustainability (CPAS) group, and the file was compiled into one master list of all courses with their associated learning objectives and descriptions.
CPAS in collaboration with other stakeholders developed a list of more than 110 sustainability-related keywords. An Excel Macro was developed and used to determine how many of the keywords were in the course title, learning objective and/or course description. As the next steps, the courses with a sustainability keyword were evaluated to determine if the course was: Sustainability-Focused, Sustainability-Inclusive, or neither. Totals for these categories respectively were then calculated for both undergraduate and graduate categories. Certain courses were removed from the list as allowed by STARS. These included: zero credit courses, inactive courses, regional only , No College Designated (independent study, Study Abroad, etc.), removed any course that is individually-directed courses (e.g. thesis, independent study, practicum).
The evaluation followed the STARS protocol of determining sustainability focused courses: primary and explicit focus on sustainability, major sustainability challenge, or sustainability within a field; and the STARS protocol of determining sustainability inclusive courses: incorporates a unity/module on sustainability, sustainability challenge, sustainability-focused activities, or integrates sustainability challenges/issues/concepts throughout the course.
