A brief description of the wildlife habitat program, policy, or practice:
Under RVCCs Memorandum of Understanding with the EPA, RVCC adopted a GreenScapes policy in March 2011. This formalized RVCC's policy of planting native plant species, adopted as part of the River Friendly program in 2010. The GreenScapes policy states RVCC's goal when landscapingn to plant diverse species of native plants in order to provide wildlife habitat. Specifically,
(1) Landscapes less than 20,000 square feet should have at least 20-30 distinct species.
(2) Landscapes with 20,000-43,560 square feet (1 acre) should have a minimum of 30-50 distinct species.
(3) Landscapes more than 1 acre should include at least 40 distinct species, with 1 additional species per acre.
As part of River Friendly certification, in 2010 RVCC installed a dozen bird boxes on campus and students conducted a wildlife inventory for the campus.
