Name of the institution’s featured sustainability program, initiative, or accomplishment:
Continuous cleaning of the Whittaker Bayou
A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:
The Bayou is isolated at the eastern edge of campus and currently underutilized.
Whitaker Bayou is a unique natural feature that can be improved and turned into an asset of campus.
Trees and vegetation are important to the character of campus and are also linked to the City of Sarasota Tree Protection Ordinance.
There is a need to be strategic about identified grand trees and incorporate new native plantings.
We installed a Watergoat trash barrier which creates a barrier that helps to capture litter before it’s carried by the tides further into our Bay. The netting is safe for wildlife and does not stop water flow.
The trapped debris is scooped up by volunteers to be properly disposed of, while collecting valuable marine debris data.
We encouraging our students, faculty and staff to use kayaks, canoes and stand paddle boards to discover the beauty of our campus.

Second Point of Distinction
Thermal storage in CEP plant
A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
The main goal of the ice plant is to reduce the monthly peak kW demand.
Thermal energy storage is like a battery for a building’s air-conditioning system. It uses standard cooling equipment, plus an energy storage tank to shift all or a portion of a building’s cooling needs to off-peak, night time hours. During off-peak hours, ice is made and stored inside IceBank energy storage tanks. The stored ice is then used to cool the building occupants the next day.
We have currently 12 storage units with a cooling capacity of 3,300 tons per hour. There is a project to add additional 12 units during winter break 2021/2022.
The Ice storage tank helps saving water consumption due to lesser evaporation on the coolinbg tower. The cooling tower is off during the melt procedure.
