Ann Howard, senior associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Rochester Institute of Technology, has earned the American College Personnel Association’s Champion of Sustainability award. Howard has been working in the field of community sustainability for more than two decades. As part of her work in this area, she established and oversees the University/Community Partnerships program in cooperation with resident leaders of neighborhoods in northeast Rochester.
Gabrielle Gaustad, professor in RIT’s Golisano Institute for Sustainability, was recently nominated by the National Science Foundation to serve on the G8 Research Councils Initiative on Multilateral Research program called “Interdisciplinary Program on Material Efficiency — A First Step Toward Sustainable Manufacturing.”
Rochester Institute of Technology professor Callie Babbitt’s research efforts in reducing the footprint of the information and communication technology industry has garnered the university an award from AT&T.
Babbitt, an assistant professor at RIT’s Golisano Institute for Sustainability, is being presented the AT&T Technology and Environment Award to develop a combined research and curriculum initiative that explores sustainable design of information and communication technology products.
Christine Keiner, associate professor of science, technology and society in the College of Liberal Arts, examined how a combination of political, economic, and social factors maintained Maryland's iconic oyster industry in her book: The Oyster Question: Scientists, Watermen, and the Maryland Chesapeake Bay since 1880.

The numbers above reflect the number of PI's on research proposals submitted through the Sponsored Research department. Not all faculty members conducting research and scholarship submit their work to the Sponsored Research department. Therefore the actual number of faculty members conducting research in general, and sustainability related research more specifically, is likely significantly higher. RIT will work to develop a more comprehensive inventory of sustainability related research over the next few years.
