Sustainable Food Systems
A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:
RWU is proud to work with Bon Appetit, a leader in sustainable campus dining, as our provider on campus. There is nexus of understanding food systems that has emerged at RWU taht ties from our dining operation, through to student clubs, and moves into our curriculum. Since partnering with the student-run Food Recovery Network in April, 2014, RWU dining operations has donated over 18,000 lbs of food to partnering agencies in need in the community that would have otherwise gone to waste. We partner with regional agencies such as Lucy’s Hearth Women & Children’s Shelter (Middletown, RI) and McKinney Cooperative Shelter (Newport, RI). This work has further evolved to help our campus begin to focus on food security on campus and in the community with a meal plan "swipe it forward" program and a Community Food Sharing Program.
