A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation:
At new student orientation, students are broken into small groups which pass through different stations. For the past 5 years, one of these stations has focused on Living Sustainably. During orientation we talk about energy use on campus in the scope of global climate change and costs. We talk about the beautiful place our campus is situated--on the second largest lake in Maine and the source of fabulous drinking water for our campus and 200,000 others in the state of Maine. We talk about our food service, which features local food and our own organic farm, Pearson Farm. New students are introduced to our roomside (like curbside) recycling in the res halls and to our single-sort recycling. Students are able to win some sustainable prizes, such as reusable water bottles. Compact fluorescent bulbs are handed out by student eco-reps, who run much of the program.
