All undergraduate students are required to take ES 300, Ecology and the Environmental Challenge. Here is a sample of sustainability learning outcomes from one syllabus:
As a result of this course, students will:
1. Be familiar with basic scientific principles used in Environmental Sciences.
2. Be familiar with scientific methods.
3. Use quantitative reasoning to interpret and present information and to solve problems
4. Describe the key principles of sustainability
5. Understand ecosystem structure and functioning.
6. Understand human population growth and human impact on ecosystems.
7. Understand the challenges of environmental problems associated with feeding the planet.
8. Understand some factors in water, air and soil pollution and mitigation measures.
9. Understand energy problems and potential solutions, including on our Saint Joseph’s College Campus.
10. Understand global climate change and the potential consequences.
11. Describe the role of governments in global environmental protection
12. Explain the role of individual actions in creating a sustainable future
13. Connect to the local environment, local species and understand some local environmental issues.
