A brief description of how representative samples were reached (if applicable) and how the cultural assessment is administered:
Students taking ES 100 are currently given the cultural assessment at the end of the semester. Biannually, students in an ES 100 section perform a research project, conducting the cultural assessment for representative samples of all campus constituencies (students, staff, faculty, administration). The most recent campus-wide assessment is being conducted in the current spring 2022 semester. Surveys are conducted generally using a Google poll function or SurveyMonkey function.
A brief summary of results from the cultural assessment:
The first campus-wide assessment conducted (2018) indicated a moderate spread of sustainability culture on campus. Generally, all constituencies are aware that SJC has a sustainability focus, and policies and curricula to promote that focus. The existence of the core course in sustainability (ES 100), and ubiquitous signage and scheduled sustainability events ensures that the community is well aware of our focus. Behaviors are where there is a greater range of response, with students showing the greatest range. The effort to truly institutionalize sustainable behaviors across all sectors is the ongoing work of the Center for Sustainable Communities.
