A brief description of the formal sustainability course designation program:
Saint Joseph’s College uses a two-tiered designation system to identify sustainability-focused (SF)courses and sustainability-related (SR) courses. The guidelines are based on *AASHE’s recommendations and **STARS recognition. Courses are designated (tagged) in the course catalog and can be easily identified both in the course listing and course descriptions. The On-Campus undergraduate course catalog has a filter by which one can search for SF- and SR-courses (https://catalog.sjcme.edu/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=-1&filter%5B29%5D=&filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&filter%5Bkeyword%5D=SF+SR&filter%5B32%5D=1&filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&cur_cat_oid=39&expand=&navoid=1519&search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter)
The Online graduate course catalog has a search function (similar to a filter) by which one can quickly identify SF- and SR- course offerings
(https://catalog.sjcme.edu/search_advanced.php?cur_cat_oid=38&search_database=Search&search_db=Search&cpage=1&ecpage=1&ppage=1&spage=1&tpage=1&location=33&filter%5Bkeyword%5D=SF+SR)
Sustainability-Focused (SF)
AASHE guideline: “…a course in which the primary and explicit focus is on sustainability and/or on understanding or solving one or more major sustainability challenge.”
Sustainability-Related (SR)
AASHE guideline: “…a course that includes sustainability that is primarily focused on a topic other than sustainability, but incorporates a unit or module on sustainability or a sustainability challenge, includes one or more sustainability- focused activities, or integrates sustainability issues throughout the course.”
* The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education
** Sustainability Tracking and Recognition System
Faculty are given the College's definition of sustainability and self-report which designation, if any, their courses carry. The catalog is updated for accuracy.
