The Center for Sustainable Communities nurtures social, environmental, and economic sustainability on our campus and in our community. As we work together to advance social justice and sustainability, we create opportunities for innovation, leadership, and change.
Reaching across disciplines to help Saint Joseph’s College grow sustainably and steward our resources responsibly. Guided by the Mercy Critical Concerns, the Sustaining the Promise Strategic Plan, and the Mission and Core Values of the College, we work collectively to:
1 Achieve carbon neutrality by 2036;
2 Promote a culture of sustainability among students, faculty, staff, administration, and surrounding communities;
3 Establish the campus as a living laboratory for sustainable solutions; and
4 Inform effective and inclusive sustainability- focused decision making on campus and in the community.

The Saint Joseph’s College community commits itself to nurturing highly competent and deeply compassionate leaders ready to serve in a vulnerable world. We recognize that our diverse perspectives are shaped by religion, nationality, experience, culture, status, and more. In order to confront the historical persistence of discrimination and oppression based on race, gender, class, abilities, and other differences, we embrace diversity and actively promote a culture of inclusiveness and equitability as vital expressions of our Core Values, the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy, and Catholic Social Teaching.

Bachelor's Degree in Leadership for Sustainable Communities
A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:
Leadership for Sustainable Communities is a next-generation degree program that combines immersive hands-on learning, career development, liberal arts principles, and Mercy values to transform learners into skilled 21st Century leaders. Learn to solve real-world problems and prepare for a lifetime of community leadership. The program goes far beyond traditional academic barriers to dig into real-world challenges — preparing students to sustain and improve critical systems in areas of Justice, the Environment, Business & Economics, and Healthcare. Working closely with a range of employers and community partners, graduates will be well-prepared for graduate school, government, nonprofit and for-profit organizations, and poised to make a positive difference in the world. This is a flexible major, making it easy to transfer in or double major.
