A brief description of the institution’s formal community partnership to advance sustainability:
The Alameda Point Collaborative (APC) transformed vacant military housing on the former Alameda Naval Air Station into a supportive housing community. APC now provides over 500 formerly homeless residents with the safety and stability of a place to call home. APC also provides a Farm to Market social enterprise, a plant nursery and on the job training to community members. Saint Mary's College has a close, ongoing formal relationship with APC. SMC provides material support in the form of student support & soil/lead testing & research, FT summer fellows, and placement of FT VISTA Members; we provide periodic financial support through joint grants. In AY18-19, 36 students from three courses invested 720 hours of service through direct service and research about sustainability practices among residents and staff at this housing community for nearly 500 formerly homeless people. Two of the four FT summer fellows who worked at APC assed at the organic farm for 640 hours. We also had a full-time VISTA Member assigned to APC to assist with fund development and volunteer management.

Urban Farmers is a grassroots, all-volunteer, 501(c)3 non-profit organization located in the East Bay of San Francisco. Their goal is to build a community-based, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable model of hunger relief. Urban Farmers helps people share their excess backyard fruit. They believe no one should suffer from lack of food, and that the poor and the hungry in your community are as important as the ones in our community. Urban Farmers has developed tools, methods, and procedures that are portable.
Saint Mary's College provides ongoing material and student support through our formal MOU relationship with this local, nonprofit.
