The Dean of the School of Liberal Arts, Sheila Hughes, is an active member and represents Saint Mary's participant in a public policy advocacy group, the East Bay Leadership Council. Sheila and this group have been actively supporting Ballot Measure J (on the March 2020 ballot), with the goals of reducing congestion and emissions and improving transit times, safety, and air quality.

Saint Mary's College has been very involved with issues surrounding student aid such as full funding of the Cal Grant in the California state budget. Also, we have long been a supporter of the Pell grants through the federal government.
Saint Mary's College has hosted legislative lunches on campus where our students discuss current public policy and legislation with our legislative delegation. Every year President Jim Donahue goes to capitol Hill to personally visit with our members of congress to brief them on the issues important to the SMC college community
