Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
The Free Store
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
The College's Free Store is a student created and managed campus thrift store where students can donate or attain lightly used items, such as textbooks, clothes, shoes, small electronics, home goods, feminine hygiene products, etc. Over the past four years, the Free Store has become self-sufficient, employing two student Free Sore Managers coordinators and has diverted hundreds of thousands of pounds of textiles and e-waste out of our waste stream. The Free Store regularly partners with our "sister store" on campus, the Gael Pantry. It also opens its doors to faculty and classes that want to use the store, its philosophy, history and service, as a teaching tool and living laboratory. The Free Store at Saint Mary's College aims to 1) reduce the amount of usable items from entering the landfill and 2) provide a space where students can access supplies for their academic and personal growth.
