The Sustainability Committee is a standing committee of the College and acts as an advisory board to the President and Cabinet.

The Sustainability Committee provides information to the President and Cabinet to inform decision making consistent with the principles of sustainability.

The Committee's Mission follows:
- Function as the primary conduit of, and clearing house for, information regarding environmental stewardship and sustainability issues on campus.
- Develop, recommend and/or sponsor educational programs that promote environmental awareness and sustainability as both an institutional and individual responsibility.
- Review and monitor operations on campus that directly affect the College’s use of resources.
- Conduct initial and annual assessments of the College’s sustainability efforts and prepare a report for the President and Cabinet.
- Develop and recommend a sustainability vision statement for the College.
- Develop rolling multi-year action plans to promote greater awareness of sustainability, to increase campus sustainability over time, and to inform annual operating and capital budget processes.


Guidelines for the Committee
- Develop, based on its duties, a mission statement, a set of operating principles, and a subcommittee structure as necessary to facilitate its work
- Make recommendations regarding plans, policies and standards that reflect and honor the College’s mission and traditions.
- Make recommendations for the best use of the financial and physical resources of the campus that further both environmental responsibility and the strategic initiatives of the College.
- Make recommendations that preserve or enhance the College’s existing architectural aesthetic.

A brief description of each sustainability office:
At Saint Mary’s, the Office of Sustainability provides a number of ways students along with our staff and faculty can engage with issues and solutions to build a more just, sustainable community through small-scale campus initiatives as well as by addressing global challenges, such as climate change, through research, teaching and advocacy. Saint Mary's Office of Sustainability uses its campus as a living laboratory for piloting sustainable food systems, waste diversion, energy and water conservation as well as addressing issues of social justice and equity. Students take advantage of numerous involvement opportunities offered by Saint Mary’s Office of Sustainability, including the Free Store, Zero Waste initiatives, Energy Efficiency projects, the Green Space program, the Legacy Garden, the Climate Reality Project, the Sustainability Living Learning Community and the Green Gaels club. Our students are the face and voice of our efforts as we continue to develop a community and culture around sustainability. A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:
Since the current Campus Sustainability Committee (formed in 2012) and its predecessor Task Force on Sustainability (formed in 2007), a number of important foundational activities have been completed. These include an assessment of the campus' current sustainability activities, development of a Sustainability Action Plan, published in May 2011, and creation of a Sustainability Vision.

In conjunction with the Campus Facilities Planning Committee, the Sustainability Committee has advised on and reviewed GHG assessments completed by Sightlines for 2011 and 2013.

Starting in 2008 the Committee began study of the STARS registration system compiled necessary data to complete a registration. This work culminated in 2013 with the search for and selection of a third party Consultant to help guide the campus through its inaugural STARS registration.

Responsibilities:
The Sustainability Director will provide leadership and initiative in conjunction with the Sustainability Committee for all sustainability efforts and practices on campus. S/he will develop, coordinate, and administer programs that increase environmental awareness and participation amongst students, faculty, and staff. The Sustainability Director will liaise across all departments to cultivate an understanding of and accordance with the college’s sustainability practices. S/he will collect, organize, and promote environmental performance data to support the effectiveness of outreach. All sustainability efforts as initiated by the Sustainability Director should support and fulfill the sustainability goals outlined in the Sustainability Committee goals and action plan.

Responsibilities:
1. Collaborate with the Sustainability Committee to design, establish, administer, and expand ongoing and emerging programs, resources, and initiatives that comply with the College’s sustainability objectives. Assist the campus (e.g. Student Life, Facilities Services, Environmental Health and Safety) with the development of sustainability programs to ensure consistent practices across all projects. Collaborate with the leadership for existing programs to promote and support such things as the Sustainability Living Learning Community; composting and food waste diversion with Sodexo; the Legacy Garden and its contingents; waste management with Facilities Services.

2. Provide leadership for students, faculty, and staff as the main coordinator for sustainability initiatives and primary contact for information on the College priorities and action. Communicate with all campus to understand individual needs, and foster relationships with influential faculty and staff in the area of sustainability. Stay up to date on current sustainability issues and policy changes in order to properly advise each department how to handle related initiatives, policies, and budgetary responsibilities.

3. Coordinate educational outreach efforts to promote participation in sustainable practices and programs amongst students, faculty, and staff. Construct awareness campaigns and coordinate the development and distribution of educational materials. Maintain consistent updates to SMC’s sustainability webpage, social media accounts, and other related outreach platforms to encourage familiarity with current educational initiatives across campus.

4. Collect, organize, analyze, and report data related to SMC’s environmental performance with special attention to those areas rated by AASHE’s STARS program. Prepare STARS reports with collected data and communicate performance levels to the Sustainability Committee. Use collected data to support other sustainability programs, initiatives, and resources.

5. Attend monthly Sustainability Committee meetings. Share news of recent installments, programs, and outreach efforts to support strategic planning. Keep up to date with sustainability issues to introduce new opportunities for improvement and growth.

Other Duties: Maintain the budget for sustainability programs and installments. Seek out grants and prepare proposals. Uphold relationships with PG&E, EBMUD, and other external partners. Handle all other external communications within the greater community related to the environment as the college’s main representative for sustainability.
