A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :
The Compact Scholars Program: In 2000 the ground breaking Compact for Success between SDUSU and the Sweetwater Union High School District created a path that broadened access to higher education for local students who meet academic benchmarks. According to 2010 President Stephen Weber "The partnership is a model for how universities and communities can work together to enhance success and, consequently, access to higher education for large numbers of diverse students." The Compact Scholars Program supports students once they matriculate by linking them with resources and providing academic engagement opportunities, which have contributed to increased graduate rates. By targeting and engaging under-represented population the Compact program enriches the community and contributes to a more diverse and sustainable university.
In 2010 the University, building upon the success of the Compact for Success model, established the College Avenue Compact to create a pathway and support system for students in the City Heights neighborhood graduating from Hoover High School.
In 2012 the third cohort of Compact Scholars graduated from San Diego State.
