A group of students are applying the UN Habitat's “Guiding Principles for City Climate Action Planning” toolkit to the campus climate action plan. We believe this is the first application of this toolkit to a campus. The students are rating the campus Climate Action Plan against the toolkit and will make recommendations.

Energy

Professor Asfaw Beyene and students analyzed the campus cogeneration plant to look for operational improvements. The focus was the impact of poor air quality on turbine performance. We implemented their recommendation to use higher efficiency filters and have seen a major increase in performance between turbine cleanings.

Professor Diana Richardson's geography class studied a grass plot on campus to determine how to increase its utilization and sustainability attributes. They came up with several recommendations which were then implemented into a new student garden on campus.

Transportation

We have established a strong relationship with Dr. Bruce Appleyard and several groups of students around campus transportation. Students developed and analyzed our campus transportation survey, which is the basis for our commute related greenhouse gas emissions. They also provide recommendations to improve the program.

A student intern received class credit to assist with the recycling efforts on campus. She developed the signage used on bins, managed RecycleMania, and conducted several bin studies that recommended changes. Hundreds of new bins use her signage design.

In 2015, a student participated in a special study to assist the campus in developing our Climate Action Plan. The focus was on analyzing the carbon content of our water consumption, based on local treatment performance and pumping distances. This factor was and is used in our greenhouse gas inventories.
